Hilliard Receives Silver at IJAS State Science Fair, Dobbs Awarded Scholarship

"The Not So Magic Card Trick"

On May 7-8, 2010, Kinsey Hilliard participated in the State Science Fair in the Assembly Hall in Champaign. Kinsey, a senior at Fairfield Community High School, had advanced to the State Science Fair from the Region 8 Science Fair held at Carbondale.

Kinsey Hilliard entered a project in Mathematics. The project was titled “The Not So Magic Card Trick.” The purpose of the experiment was to see if the 11th card variation could be used with more cards, considering now it is only proven that it can be repeatable with 21. As long as there are an odd number of cards in each pile and an odd number of piles, there will always be a middle card. She believed that there will be more combinations of cards that will be repeatable. Her hypothesis was that she would be able to find another combination of cards. Her hypothesis was supported. Kinsey’s project had received a $50 Award at the Region 8 Science Fair due to being selected as the best mathematics project. She was awarded a Silver Rating at Champaign.
