FCHS Launches Redesigned Website
The following is commentary from Josh Hensley, designer of the new website and assistant to Technology Coordinator, Marc Leighty.
Three years ago, I joined FCHS Technology Coordinator Marc Leighty, assisting with web development, among other things. At the time, the FCHS website served its purpose, delivering required information to the community. However, since that first day, more than three years ago, we have expanded and the website has undergone several facelifts.
A big jump in our online presence was the introduction of what we have called "Parent Connect," an area allowing parents to view grades and other crucial information about their FCHS student.
Over time, in order to accommodate the needs of the community, we have expanded the amount of vital information made available on our website. This is where the new website design comes into play.
The new design presents what we believe to be a clean and organized layout and navigation style. The new homepage contains more text and less "filler material," providing more information to visitors. In addition, we have added several enhancements to the new website, including a new "Photo of the Day" area. This is just one of the ways in which we are going to provide new and interesting content that changes on a daily basis.
The overall goal and purpose of our website is for it to be "informative from every angle." This means that the website is not just about providing a pleasing design, but making sure the content that it contains serves a purpose and is advantageous to the public.
This new design will be the last major upgrade in aesthetics before I step aside in May 2010, due to my graduation. Developing this website has enhanced my skills and has been a rewarding experience for me. I am glad that I have been trusted to assist with its development. Marc Leighty, FCHS Technology Coordinator, has been open to new ideas throughout my work with him. It is because of his friendliness and open mind for change that the website has evolved to what it is today. Even though the website is far from perfect, I think it is wonderful that the school allows it to remain within their walls, rather than outsourcing the project to a web development firm. I welcome any comments on this article or the website. Just send an e-mail to fchsweb@fchsmules.com
